Biography

Eyal Shahar, MD, MPH. Dr. Shahar’s research focuses on subject matter epidemiology and methodology. His epidemiological research over the past twenty years has encompassed many aspects of cardiovascular disease, including surveillance and causes of coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Most of his work involves collaboration on multi-center cohort studies. Currently, he is a co-investigator of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, the Jackson Heart Study (JHS), and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), all of which are funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). Previously, Dr. Shahar was one of the Principal Investigators of the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), a multi-center study of the relation between sleep apnea (abnormal breathing during sleep) and cardiovascular disease. In recent years, Dr. Shahar has also made significant contributions to research methodology, especially in the domain of causal diagrams and biases.

Teaching interests:

Dr. Shahar has developed and taught two courses in a sequence of three courses on epidemiological methods, including online offering of one course. In recent years, he taught a total of 9 credits per year to about 100 students each year. He is now developing a new course on causal diagrams and bias in epidemiological research.

Research Interests:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Sleep-disordered breathing
  • Bias in epidemiological research
  • Causal diagrams

1987     M.D., Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel

1992     M.P.H. Epidemiology, Division of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota
