Biography

Myra L. Muramoto, M.D., M.P.H., is Professor of Family & Community Medicine, and Professor of Public Health at the University of Arizona. Dr. Muramoto is a translational researcher experienced with a wide range of research settings and special populations. She has conducted studies in healthcare, community, public health, and international health settings. Special populations in her research include: medically compromised, change-resistant smokers; Latinos, American Indians, rural African Americans; adolescents; low-income pregnant women and families; military personnel; and practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine.  Dr. Muramoto’s research has been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Centers for Disease Control Foundation, state governments and multiple industry sponsors.  Much of her research focuses on use of technology and activation of social networks to promote healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes. Dr. Muramoto is also a practicing family physician for the University of Arizona Health Network where she is the founding Director of the Tobacco-Free Living Program and founding co-Director the Clinical Weight Loss Program for severe obesity.

Dr. Muramoto is a scientific advisor for the American Academy of Pediatrics Richmond Center of Excellence for Children. She served on the Center for Medicare Services Expert Panel on Tobacco Dependence Treatment, the Emerging Science Advisory Panel for the American Legacy Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Consumer Demand Expert Roundtable, and as a charter member of the National Institute for Drug Abuse’s Treatment study section.  Dr. Muramoto consulted for the World Bank Group on tobacco cessation projects in Indonesia and Romania, and has conducted tobacco research in Africa, Egypt, Mexico, India, Indonesia and Nepal.
