Dan Derksen, MD, professor of public health policy and management and director of the Center for Rural Health at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, spoke today before the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee on Health, in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Derksen provided expert testimony on “Rural Health Care Disparities Created by Medicare Regulations and Payment.”

Dr. Derksen did not represent the University of Arizona or any other entity. He drew from his more than 30 years of experience as:
- a family physician practicing in underserved sites where most of his patients were on Medicare or Medicaid, or were uninsured
- a faculty member creating training programs and preparing health professions students to practice in rural communities
- director of an academic faculty practice plan
- a director working for a governor to establish a state-based health insurance marketplace
- and as a health policy fellow working for a U.S. senator researching and drafting legislation to improve the supply and distribution of the health workforce to rural areas
