Ronald Watson, PhD |
Ronald Watson, PhD, should have a sign in his office that reads, “Over 100 biomedical books edited”.
Dr. Watson is a professor in the health promotion sciences division of the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. Many of the books he has edited over the years focus on nutrition and food sciences. The latest five volume set published by Academic Press (October 2012) is part of a series of books in the category of Bioactive Foods and Chronic Disease States.
Dr. Watson is an internationally recognized alcohol-researcher, nutritionist and immunologist. Dr. Watson has directed several biomedical grants funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) relating to bioactive disease, mainly immune function and cardiovascular effects including studying complementary and alternative medicines. His research includes dietary supplements in the treatment of diabetes and related cardiovascular disease including heart failure in humans and animal models, working in Tucson and with studies in Korea, India, and New Zealand.
Editing 102 books keeps Dr. Watson busy and connected. “All are edited, multi-authored scientific books with some chapters edited by my graduate students and a few by undergraduate public health students,” said Dr. Watson. He estimates that more than 12,000 scientists from around the world have contributed to these books.
Dr. Watson credits the volume of his editorial work over the past six years to Arizona Health Sciences Librarians Annabelle Nunez, Nga Thi Nguyen and Mari Stoddard; his editorial assistant Bethany Stevens; and longtime collaborator Editor Victor Preedy, PhD, of King’s College London, School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, London, UK.
The new five volume set of books includes 3,300 pages with 450 contributing authors from around the world, including alumni and current students at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health.
