2014 Student Showcase Winners
Three graduate students from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health walked away with honors at this year’s Student Showcase on November 7.
Student Showcase is hosted by the Graduate & Professional Student Council. Students receive prize money by demonstrating the ability to discuss the cultural implications of their work in combination with exceptional talent and research skills.
Deanna Lewis, MPH, and Chinagozi Ugwu won First and Second Place respectively for their posters in the Public Health Graduate Students category.
Deanna’s poster is titled: A Learner-Centered Approach for Community-Based Researchers to Conduct a Formative Assessment for Reproductive Health Education in the Ekumfi District, Central Region, Ghana. Chinagozi’s poster is titled: Feasibility of Using Standard Verbal Autopsy Instrument to Assess Causes of Infant Death in Enugu, Nigeria.
DeRay Chatter won First Place in the Public Health Undergraduate Student category. His poster is titled: Together on Diabetes (TOD) Program Assessment.
The exhibits are judged by a panel of faculty, fellow students, and community members. Judges consider overall display, clarity of presentation, and the exhibitors’ ability to field questions concerning their project, in addition to the academic and/or scientific merit and the value of their research to the community.
Donors and judges from across campus and the Tucson community participate. Local business sponsors contribute a substantial amount of support for Student Showcase each year. The Student Showcase allows the Tucson community to take pride in the University and its continuing capacity to further education and visionary research.
Environmental Grad Blitz 2014
Yoshira Ornelas won first place for her poster in the Best Linkage Between Science & Society category at the 2014 Environmental Grad Blitz, hosted by the UA Institute for the Environment.
Her poster is titled: Microbial, Inorganic, and Organic Contaminants in Private Wells along Santa Cruz River, Arizona. The research was done in conjunction with the NGO Friends of the Santa Cruz River with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Justice Grants.
In October, Yoshira won Honorable Mention for the same poster at the International Society of Exposure Science Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio. Faculty, staff and alumni from the Environmental Health Sciences section (Jeff Burgess, Mary Kay O’Rourke, Eric Lutz, Anna Sugeng, Kerton Victory, Rustin Reed and Nate Lothrop) attended the conference and were there to cheer her on.
American Industrial Hygiene Association Award for Best Student Poster
Rustin Reed, MPH (2014) won Best Student Poster at the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s Conference & Expo in San Antonio, TX in May. His winning poster is titled: "Occupational Heat Strain in a Hot Underground Mine". Rustin is currently working on a PhD in Industrial Hygiene.
DrPH Student Receives $5,000 Dissertation Award
Christina Oré de Boehm received a $5,000 Dissertation Award from the Programa de Investigacion de Migracion y Salud (PIMSA), the Health Initiative of the Americas, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. Christine is a DrPH student in Public Health Policy and Management. Her dissertation is titled, Yaqui Health Development: Determinants of Yaqui Auxiliares' Public Health Capacity.
