Philip Harber Named One of Tucson’s ‘Top Doctors’

Philip Harber, MD, MPH, named one of Tucson Lifestyle’s “Top Doctors” for occupational medicine in the September issue of the magazine. He was also recognized nationally as one of ‘America’s Top Doctors’ in the specialty of Occupational Medicine.

Dr. Harber is a professor of public health at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

Dr. Harber’s work integrates public health, research and clinical approaches in the areas of occupational and environmental pulmonary disease, respirators, clinical decision analysis and informatics, workers compensation quality improvement, occupational health services organization and occupational ability/disability/impairment assessment.

Nearly 100 physicians primarily affiliated with Banner – University Medical Center Tucson or Banner – University Medical Center South made the Tucson Lifestyle list.

Previously, Dr. Harber was professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and chief of the Division of Occupational-Environmental Medicine. He directed the occupational-environmental medicine residency. Dr. Harber received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his MPH degree from Johns Hopkins. He has been certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and occupational-environmental medicine.

Cynthia Thomson Named ‘Influential Health and Medical Leader’

Cynthia A. Thomson, PhD, RD, a registered dietitian and tenured professor of public health at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, was named a finalist for her medical research in the Influential Health and Medical Leaders Awards by Tucson Local Media.  She has lead a comprehensive research program focused on the role of diet, physical activity and obesity in health promotion with an emphasis on cancer survivors for more than 20 years. During this time, she has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health for her research, resulting in the publication of over 200 manuscripts and book chapters to advance medical research.

Dr. Thomson directs the UA Canyon Ranch Center for Prevention and Health Promotion, the Cancer Prevention and Control program at the UA Cancer Center and the Arizona Smokers Helpline. These research and programming efforts are, by design, developed to improve the health of Arizonans and reduce risk for chronic disease associated with lifestyle behavior choices.

Currently, Thomson leads the largest national study of lifestyle behaviors ever undertaken in ovarian cancer, one of the more lethal cancers diagnosed in women. The LIVES study is designed to test the role of diet and activity in reducing ovarian cancer recurrence. In addition, she leads the local research team for the Women’s Health Initiative, research that have resulted in over 1,100 publications nationally over the past 20 years, many of which have informed on the clinical care of postmenopausal women. Cyndi has a passion for mentoring having trained over 60 students and young professionals to assure they have the resources they need to achieve their professional goals.
