David G. Marrero, PhD

David G. Marrero, PhD, director of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center for Health Disparities Research and professor of public health at the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, has been appointed to a new national diabetes working group and task force to promote equitable and comprehensive diabetes care.

The Diabetes Working Group and Equity Task Force was created by the Sustainable Healthy Communities (SHC) organization, which is partnering with some of the nation’s leading advocacy groups, experts, academic institutions and innovators to promote equitable, community-based and patient-centered care for those suffering from diabetes. A shared sense of emergency among health-care leaders led to the creation of the task force. 

Founded by the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), SHC is a health-care information company that measures population health, providing analysis to clinicians, health-care systems, researchers, corporations, patients and policy-makers, promoting cost-effective health outcomes through big data analytics. 

Dr. Marrero is a noted expert in diabetes education and research. His work focuses on medication adherence, community health programs, early diabetes intervention and translational medicine. His research interests also include strategies for promoting diabetes prevention, improving diabetes care practices used by primary care providers and the use of technology to facilitate care and education.

As executive director of the UAHS Center for Health Disparities Research, Dr. Marrero provides leadership to improve the delivery of diabetes health care in border populations through strong partnerships with the Banner – University Medical Group practices in Phoenix and Tucson, representatives from local federally qualified health centers, the Arizona Area Health Education Centers (AzAHECs) and other UA Health Sciences’ centers and programs.
