Scarlett Lewis, founder of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, a nonprofit charitable organization and curriculum based on social-emotional learning (SEL) for children and adults, will speak on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in DuVal Auditorium, 1501 Campbell Ave., at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. The event is sponsored by the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

The Choose Love Enrichment Program teaches SEL skills, which Lewis believes is the best way to cultivate a safe classroom and school climate. The program teaches children how to get along, how to have healthy and positive relationships, meaningful connections, skills and tools for conflict resolution and responsible decision making.

Over the last three years the no-cost program has been downloaded more than 30,000 times in all 50 states and in nearly 80 countries.

Lewis founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement after her son was among the 26 children and educators who were murdered in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2012. Shortly after his death, Scarlett decided to be part of the solution and created the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.

During her talk, Lewis will describe the Choose Love Enrichment Program, why and how she decided to become part of the solution to the issues we are facing in schools and society today, and the impact that decision has made to-date.

In addition, Heidi Pottinger, DrPH, MPH, MA, a director of clinical investigations in the Department of Health Promotion Sciences at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health and founder and executive director of the non-profit organization Child Health & Resilience Mastery (CHARM), and Nisa Stover Talavera, CHARM founding vice chair, will share information about their work to spread the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement in Arizona and ways to get involved at home, in schools, and throughout the community.

Public parking is available in the Health Sciences Parking Garage, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., on the top level only. The cost is $2 per hour; no cash; only credit and debit cards are accepted. Visitors also may use the Passport Parking app to pay for parking. The app is free to download from iOS or Android. Additional metered parking is available in various lots on the UA Health Sciences Campus.
