As part of the Global Health Institute Scholars program, twelve students conducted research in countries around the world during the summer of 2023 to advance public health knowledge and programs across a range of global health challenges.
During the summer of 2023, twelve passionate Global Health Institute Scholars from the University of Arizona conducted health research in countries around the world. They focused on a wide variety of health challenges, from breast cancer to clean water to contraception. United by a shared commitment to advancing global health, this group of scholars worked collaboratively with institutions and local residents, transcending borders and cultures, to contribute meaningfully to the communities where they practiced.
Through the Global Health Institute (GHI) Scholars program at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH), students receive funding to work on public health research and projects in other countries, an experience that expands their abilities, knowledge, and perspective. A unique educational experience, the GHI Scholars Program prepares students to deliver and evaluate health programs in different countries and cultures. The process challenges them to become more effective public health professionals, whether they work in the United States or abroad. 2023 Global Health Institue Scholars
Cognitive Assessment in Egypt
GHI Scholar Aimee Slagle, a recent MPH and MA graduate, journeyed to Egypt, contributing to the validation of the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) at the American University in Cairo. Aiming to enhance cognitive health assessment tools, Aimee's work will have far-reaching implications for understanding cognitive health in the Egyptian context.

Exploring Breast Cancer Downstaging in Ghana
In collaboration with the Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations (CEESP) program, MPH student Roselyn Amamoo spearheaded groundbreaking research in Kumasi, Ghana. Her project focused on investigating patient factors related to the possible downstaging of breast cancer. Simultaneously, MPH student Rosemond Amamoo, engaged in a hospital-based evaluation of palliative care among breast cancer patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). These initiatives are poised to contribute significantly to the understanding and improvement of breast cancer care in the region.
Navigating Neurodevelopmental Care Challenges in Ireland
Doctoral Student Oriyomi Dawodu chose Limerick, Ireland, as the backdrop for her research. Focused on neurodevelopmental follow-up, Oriyomi explored the facilitators and barriers through a qualitative study at the University of Limerick, providing evidence that can shape neurodevelopmental care strategies in the region.
Global Health Initiatives in Mexico
In Mexico, undergraduate student Makinzie Perry engaged in health promotion and education at UNAM FES Zaragoza gaining valuable insights into community wellness and enhancing her skills for promoting health awareness. Simultaneously in Mexico at the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (INSP), MPH student Rachel Wesenberg conducted a critical analysis of contraceptive access for migrant women traveling through Mexico, contributing valuable insights to the intersection of reproductive health and migration.
Addressing Sexual Health Challenges in Peru
Our GHI Scholars ventured into Lima, Peru, where MPH students Meredith Brewer and Micaela Gamez conducted research at the Universidad Privada San Juan Bautista (UPSJB). Meredith's project delved into sexually transmitted infections among immigrants in Lima, while Micaela focused on surveying sexual coercion and associated factors in adults in Metropolitan Lima. Their work seeks to shed light on the nuanced challenges surrounding sexual health in diverse populations.
Tackling Water Insecurity and Diseases Linked to Climate Change in Tanzania
A team of four GHI Scholars undertook research at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania. MPH Student Thania Brinks Zuñiga and undergraduate student Victoria Lynch took on the challenge of assessing household water insecurity in Dar es Salaam. Meanwhile, MPH Students Taylor Simmons and Bikyeombe Yves investigated the intricate association between climate change and waterborne diseases. Their collective efforts will inform strategies for enhancing water accessibility and mitigating climate-related health risks.
