The Southern Arizona Heat Planning Summit included Dr. Mona Arora, Dr. Heidi Brown, and Dr. Melissa Furlong and graduate students from the Zuckerman College of Public Health in addition to representatives from the City of Tucson, Pima County, and the UArizona’s College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA). Participants in the Summit produced an Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan that was adopted by AZ Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Dr. Mona Arora and the college’s Southwest Center for Resilience in Climate Change and Health (SCORCH) helped to organize the Summit in collaboration with CAPLA, the City of Tucson, and Pima County.
Following on the plan submitted to the state, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs appointed Dr. Eugene Livar as the first Chief Health Officer for Arizona (and the first in the nation) to lead the response to extreme heat for the Arizona Department of Health Services.
