In 2019, 8,162 Indigenous youth and 2,285 Indigenous adults were reported missing to the National Crime Information Center, or NCIC, out of a total of 609,275 cases.
The Association on American Indian Affairs said that homicide is the third leading cause of death of Indigenous women between 10 and 24 years of age, and is the fifth leading cause of death between ages 25 and 34, for Native women in the United States.
On April 27th at 1pm, the MMIW (Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women) Awareness Panel will discuss the issues with investigating missing and murdered indigenous women. This year’s MMIW Awareness Day is on May 5th.
