Research Policies

The University of Arizona (UA) complies with Federal and State research policies. The UA also has established a number of written policies that apply to research.

These written policies include those on conflict of interest and commitment; technology transfer; ethics; regulatory compliance; direct and indirect costs of sponsored agreements; intellectual property rights; and radiation and lab worker training. University policies also include: computing, faculty governance, financial policies, human resources, and State and Federal relations.

Use of Human Subjects Policy

Most importantly, there are strict written policies to protect human subjects and animals used in research.

Go to the Human Subjects Protection Program website to review information on their policies, procedures, human subjects training certification and more. The Human Subjects Protection program provides guidance on different aspects of research on the Guidance for Researchers page.

The Research Office serves as the conduit for human subjects reviews emanating from the College’s appointed personnel and student field-projects prior to their being sent to the University of Arizona Human Subjects Office for approval.

Several years ago, a UA Zuckerman College of Public Health policy was instituted to require all graduate students to obtain human subjects certification and require that all MPH internship proposals undergo human subjects review.

Policy Against Accepting Tobacco Money for Research

The UA Zuckerman College of Public Health does not to accept funding of any kind from organizations known to be directly funded by the tobacco industry.

For more about the history and rationale for this policy, along with the corporations identified as having ties with the tobacco industry, read the policy here.
