This semester's keynote address will be given by Ron Barber, former Arizona Congressman. He will be speaking on "Disability and Stigma: The Far-Reaching Impacts within Public Health". Mr. Barber was District Administrator and State Director for the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) for over 30 years. After resigning in 2006, he began working along side Gabrielle Giffords as the Community Outreach Director for her congressional campaign. He was appointed District Director when Giffords was elected into office. He was standing beside Congresswoman Giffords when the January 8, 2011 shooting occurred that took the lives of six people and injured 17 others, including Congresswoman Giffords and Mr. Barber. Soon after the shooting, Barber established the Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding, which focuses on promoting civil discourse, preventing bullying in schools, and reducing stigma associated with mental illnesses. When Congresswoman Giffords stepped down to focus on her recovery, Barber ran for her seat and was elected. Barber held his position in Congress from 2012-2015.
A light reception will follow student presentations in the Walkway of Wellness in Tucson and Building 4 of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus
