ACTR Objectives and Frequently Asked Questions

Following are just a few questions commonly asked about the ACTR. If you have a question that is not answered, please contact the ACTR Certificate Coordinator.

What are the objectives of the ACTR?

The ACTR has two main objectives:

  1.  To educate program scholars in the principles, methods, and techniques used in clinical and translational research including patient-oriented research, epidemiological and behavioral studies, outcomes or health services research through a multidisciplinary approach.
  2.  To provide program scholars with the tools necessary to become independently clinical researchers who will contribute to the advancement of biomedical science and health care.

How much time is needed to complete the certificate requirements?

The time needed to complete the certificate requirements largely depends on a scholar's existing commitments at entry to the program and especially the support the scholar has from his/her supervisor or employer to participate in the program. Scholars are strongly encouraged to secure sufficient support to complete the program within two years.

How much time do the classes require?

In general, most scholars should plan to devote between 9 to 12 hours a week, on average, to complete each course.

What type of background must one have to be considered for admission to the ACTR?

Applicants with graduate degrees in such disciplines as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, or other health-related fields may apply to the ACTR. Those intending to apply for K23 or similar NIH awards are urged to apply to the program. Applicants should be able to communicate their interests in pursuing clinical and translational research careers in their application materials (see next question). See also Admissions Criteria.

When is the application due?

There are two application deadlines. To start in the fall semester the deadline is May 15th. To start in the spring the deadline is September 15th.  Applications received after the deadline may be considered on a space-available basis.

What happens to applications after the Graduate College receives them?

Applications received by the application deadline are sent to the ACTR Admission Committee for consideration. The applicants should be notified about the admission decision within 3-4 weeks after the application deadline.

How much does the certificate program cost?

The cost for this certificate includes tuition and fees for a total of 13 credit units, a research ethics workshop, and research experience mentoring. The graduate tuition rates are outlined by the UA Bursar's Office (dependent on state of residence) and there is a $250/unit certificate fee. Students eligible for Qualified Tuition Reduction as a university employee, spouse or eligible dependent of a university employee may use this benefit to offset a majority of the cost. Certificate students are ineligible to receive most other forms of financial aid (including federal loans and graduate assistantship benefits).
